Dena Marie Carter

Obituary Date: Thursday, October 31, 2024

Evans Funeral Home of Jefferson announces the death of Ms. Dena Marie Carter, age 74, of Athens, Georgia who entered rest Thursday, October 31, 2024. Ms. Carter was born in Athens, Georgia the daughter of the late Buford Clyde Crawford and the late Mildred Ray Crawford.

Ms. Carter taught Marketing and Youth Apprenticeship at Jackson County Comprehensive High School until retirement. She was a member of Ebenezer United Methodist Church and had a close relationship with God.

Her favorite role in life was being a mother to her daughter, Ashlee, and her son, Brent, and being Omie to her 5 grandchildren. She was an avid reader and animal lover. She could always be counted on for a good game of cards and could shuffle and deal better than any dealer in Vegas. Omie was a great listener and had a wonderful soul. Although circumstances prevented her from doing it later in life, she loved to dance -especially to the Drifters and The Jesters with her long-time best friends. She loved onion rings and a heavy chili dog from the Varsity and we’re pretty sure she has single-handedly kept the salt and sweet tea industry alive for the past 50 years. She loved her older sister, Sheila, and was Aunt Dena to her two nieces, Melissa and Tina. She was a wonderful source of support and wisdom to so many people. She never did understand the concept of an app or talking on the phone without being on speaker to the endless bewilderment of her grandkids. She battled health issues her adult life and was always so appreciative and caring to those who treated her in any capacity. She said so many times that it took less energy to be kind and it could make a difference in someone’s day. She had the biggest heart and heaven is so much sweeter now that she’s home.

Survivors include daughter, Ashlee Williams (Casey) of Commerce, GA. Son, Brent Carter of Guntersville, AL. Five grandchildren, Payne, Mason, Tallulah, Sadie and Charlee. Sister, Shelia Woods of Athens, GA.

Memorial services will be held 2:00 P.M. Sunday, November 10, 2024 at Evans Funeral Home Chapel with Evelyn Wells officiating. The family will receive friends Sunday from 1 P.M. until 2 P.M. prior to the service at Evans Funeral Home.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Compassus Hospice 2470 Daniels Bridge Road Athens, Georgia 30606.
