Robert Chandler Ellis, 83, passed away on Monday, October 28, 2024, at Elanor Personal Care Home in Winder. Robert was born March 21, 1941, and was the son of Molene and Leon Ellis. He was born in Savannah, Georgia but raised on a family farm with his brother Lee in Hull, Georgia and attended Commerce High School. After high school, Robert earned both a bachelor’s and master’s degrees from the University of Georgia and then embarked on a lengthy career in education.
After teaching briefly at Jefferson Middle School and Banks County High School, Robert began a lengthy tenure of at Commerce High School where he taught history. Robert also coached several sports, most notably football, and was part of several winning Coaching staffs, including the 1981 AA State Football Champions.
Family was especially important to Robert. He and his wife Pat were high school sweethearts, married and settled in Commerce, where they enjoyed 60 years of marriage and were blessed with three sons – Bob (Jennifer), John, and Craig (Jennifer). Robert was a proud grandfather to his five grandchildren – Chandler, Lindsey, Nathan, Elinor and Caroline.
Faith was a vital part of Robert’s life. He was a long-term member at Commerce Presbyterian Church where he served as an Elder, among other leadership capacities. In recent times, Robert returned to his Baptist roots and joined First Baptist Church of Commerce.
Visitation will be from 5:30 to 7:30 PM on Tuesday, November 5th. The funeral will be at 1:00 PM on Wednesday, November 6th at First Baptist Church of Commerce. Burial will follow the service at Jackson Memorial Gardens.
