Mary Ruth Thurmond Brawner

Mrs. Mary Ruth Thurmond Brawner, age 88 of Mize Road, Toccoa passed away Friday, October 25, 2024 at The Overlook Assisted Living Toccoa.

A daughter of the late Paul Elisha Thurmond and Mary Opel Kellar Thurmond, she was born November 9, 1935 in Franklin County, Georgia, having grown up in the Red Hill Community and later moved to Stephens County where she has lived for 60 years.  She was retired from Coats and Clark with many years of service.  She was a member of Hunter’s Creek Baptist Church where she grew up.  Her late husband, The Reverend Truitt Brawner served as pastor at Broad River, Clarks Creek, Riverside, Northside, Mullins Ford and Indian Creek and Mary Ruth served along side her husband in the music ministry and teaching.  Her passion was writing poetry and songs. 

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, The Reverend Truitt Brawner and by a sister, Jocile McFarlin.

Survivors include two daughters and sons-in-law, Amelia and Bill Cochran and Theresa and Ken Davis both of Toccoa; son and daughter-in-law, Tim and Julie Brawner of Toccoa; grandchildren, Jeremy Singletary, Ryan Cochran, Alison Shelton, Heather Weckesser, Lance Brawner, Morgan Walker and Maddy Barnes; great-grandchildren, Bryce, Brady, Samuel, Lilly, Olivia, Parker, Carson, Saige, Austin, Keaton, Ransom, Lily, Joel, Kelsey, Isaiah, Brantley, Hudson and Owen Truitt; sisters, Pauline McFarlin, Sandra Elrod and Shirley Pritchett all of the Red Hill Community in Franklin County; a number of nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be Monday, October 28, 2024, 4 o’clock p.m. at Hunters Creek Baptist Church with The Reverend Jeremy Singletary, The Reverend David Ritcey and Mr. Carson Weckesser officiating.  The following gentlemen will serve as pallbearers, Ryan Cochran, Lance Brawner, Zach Shelton, Roland Weckesser, Marcus Rogers, Tyler Owenby, Josiah Barnes and Nathan Walker.  Honorary pallbearers will be Steve McFarlin and Roger Pritchett.

The family will receive friends at the Acree-Davis Funeral Home on Monday from noon until 3:15 p.m.  Online condolences may be left for the family at www.acree-davisfh.com.

Interment will follow in the Hunters Creek Baptist Church Cemetery with The Reverend Ben Huff officiating.
