David Winston Scroggs

Obituary Date: Monday, October 7, 2024

David Winston Scroggs of Gainesville, Georgia, passed away suddenly on October 7th, 2024.

David was born on June 26th, 1945, as the 7th of nine children.  He grew up in Oakwood, Georgia, and resided in Hall County the remainder of his life.  He attended South Hall High School, then Young Harris College in Hiawassee, Georgia, where he met the love of his life, Patricia.  They have been married for 57 years. David is preceded in death by father George M. Scroggs, mother Fellie Reed Scroggs, brother George Scroggs,Jr., and sister Jessie Scroggs.

He leaves behind his bride of 57 years, Patricia Nettles Scroggs, son Jason Scroggs and his wife Tara and their two sons, Lawson and Cooper, daughter Cindy (Scroggs)Dyer and her husband Brandon Dyer, and their three sons, Jackson, Baker, and Charlie.

He also leaves behind a large, loving family of brothers and sisters and their families. (Sister) Wilma Propes, Beth and Ed Suggs, their children and grandchildren, Trudy and John Wilkerson, their children and grandchildren, Mark and Rebecca Propes, their children and grandchildren. (Brother)James and Roberta Scroggs, Craig and Lori Scroggs, their children and grandchildren, Pat and Greg Byrd, their children and grandchildren, Michael and Amy Scroggs, their children, (Sister)Marion Scroggs, (Sister)Jan and Bill Piper, Andrew and Ali Piper, their children and grandchildren, Joe and Marsha Piper, (Sister)Carol Jones, Rob and Tracy Jones, Wes Jones, (Brother)Danny and Glenda Scroggs, Emmett and Julie Forrester, their children, Jon and Kara Scroggs and their children.

David was a builder by trade for many years in Hall County.  He was also a member of the Hall County Home Builders and President for a term.  Although he had many years of professional success, his greatest title was “Pop” to his five grandsons.  He loved everything about each one of them from the minute they were born.  He would often say about each “That boy is so smart, he can do anything he sets his mind to” and then provide MANY specific examples.

Not only did his love his family big, he loved his little dog, Willie Nelson, big.  Over the last few years, he and Willie could be found riding the Kubota together all over his property, and watching Andy Griffith in their recliner.  Willie was also his constant dining companion always getting his 10% of whatever David was eating…. Always followed by the statement “but he isn’t’ spoiled”.

David was never more happy than when he could cook for his family.  Whether it was a huge breakfast of bacon (crispy) and eggs with cinnamon rolls, or a dinner of a standing rib roast or beef filet with all of the sides, he loved to share a meal.  One of his lifelong hobbies was woodworking.  He could build just about anything out of wood as long as he had “shop drawings”, even with his diminished eyesight.

David will be missed but his family is rejoicing that he can watch over protect them from heaven.

A small, family service will be held Wednesday, October 16th.  A Celebration of Life to be planned for a later date.

In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to the Hall County Humane Society.
