It is with great sadness that the family of Tommy Bennett Hughes announces his passing at his home on Monday morning, September 30, 2024. Born on May 29, 1939, Mr. Hughes was a lifelong resident of Dawson County, Georgia, and active member of Bethel United Methodist Church. He had a Bachelor’s of Science in Agriculture and Poultry Science from the University of Georgia, graduating in 1967. Mr. Hughes owned and operated several businesses throughout his lifetime including being known as the “Chicken Doctor,” within the Dawsonville community. One of the joys of his life was owning and operating his John Deere agricultural dealership in Dawsonville, throughout the 70s and into the early 80s. Tommy Hughes was a Freemason and a member of the Shriner’s International Fraternity and a charter member of the Dawson County Jaycees. He participated yearly in the Lumpkin Campground’s Camp Meeting.
Mr. Hughes is preceded in death by his parents Horace and Gladys Hughes and brother Bill Hughes. He leaves behind his sons Michael Gregory Hughes and Mitchell Thomas Hughes as well as his grandson Preston Thomas Lee.
Visitation will be at Bethel United Methodist Church on October 5, 2024, from 11:00 a.m. - 12:00pm. A graveside service and interment will be at 12:00 p.m. with light refreshments to follow in the Fellowship Hall.
