Peggy Faye Starnes

Obituary Date: Sunday, September 29, 2024

Peggy Faye Starnes, 76, of Murrayville, Georgia, passed away at home surrounded by her loved ones in the early morning hours on Sunday, September 29th, 2024, after a quick decline in her health.

Peggy was the first of six children born to Esker and Elsie Vickery in Winfield, Alabama, on October 22nd, 1947. The family moved from Winfield to Memphis, Tennessee, when she was in her early teens, and she graduated from Oakhaven High School in 1965. She attended Draughon’s School of Business.

An incredibly hard worker with an exceptional work ethic, she had a diverse and interesting career. Some of her favorite jobs were working for American Express in Munich, Germany, during the Vietnam War, Disney World in the 1970s in the Public Relations Department, and Mid-South Fair/Libertyland in Memphis. After moving back to Winfield in the early 1980s, she was able to secure a position at 3M Company at the Guin, Alabama plant. She transferred from Guin to Austin, Texas in the late 1990s, and then from Austin to Atlanta, Georgia in the early 2000s. In 2004 she retired from 3M to be a full-time “maw maw”.

Anyone who knew Peggy remembers her big smile, generous heart and beautiful laugh. She was kind to everyone and treated everyone like family. She genuinely cared for people and would go out of her way to help someone in need, and she always did everything she could to make people feel welcome and comfortable. Aside from her kindness and generosity, she was incredibly brave and strong.

Of everything that she accomplished, her children and her grandchildren were the joy of her life. Nothing made her happier than to be surrounded by those whom she loved most in the world.

Tragically, in 2008, she had an aneurysm rupture, and it led to her being disabled for the past 16 years. However, her tragedy didn’t dampen her spirit, and she never met a stranger and made sure she talked to everyone she came in contact with as if she had known them her whole life.

Preceding her in death are her parents; brothers, Larry Joe and Roger Dale Vickery; and son, Jason Lewis Starnes.

She is survived by her daughter, Cynthia (Cindy) DeLong (Jerry) and son, Christopher (Chip) Starnes, both of Murrayville, Georgia; her sister, Carolyn Scott, of Fayetteville, Tennessee; brothers James Randall (Randy) Vickery, of Decaturville, Tennessee, and Richard (Rick) Vickery (Connie), of Jacksonville, Florida; grandchildren Shelby Starnes, of Winfield, Alabama;  Alex May, Olivia May, and Connor May, of Murrayville, Georgia; many loving nieces and nephews.

A celebration of life will be held at a later date in Winfield, Alabama.
