Jack Parker Ferguson, loving husband, father, grandfather and great pa passed away in Gainesville on September 7, 2024 at the age of 90. He was preceded in death by his parents, Harold and Myrtle Ferguson of Rochester Hills, Michigan. He was a member of the Friendship Sunday School of First Baptist Church since retiring to Gainesville in 1990.
Jack was born in Pontiac, Michigan on April 22, 1934. He joined the Air Force in 1955 and met his wife, Jeannette DeVane, while stationed in Fayetteville, North Carolina. At his passing, they had been married 68 years, raised two daughters; loved five grandchildren and nine great grandchildren.
Jack was the first navigator to be selected as Wing Commander of a Flying Unit after serving as Base Commander of multiple bases. Following a distinguished career filled with promotions, numerous commendations, medals, and honors, he was promoted to Brigadier General in March of 1985. When asked how he felt about this promotion, he said, “I decided long ago to shoot for the stars and I did it. I am elated”. He retired at this rank in 1990 and moved to Gainesville to enjoy 34 years of loving his family, playing golf, community service and watching his grandchildren and great grandchildren thrive.
He said one of the happiest days of his life was when he had lived in the South longer than the North because he did not like shoveling snow and enjoyed playing golf almost year-round.
Jack’s passing has left a void in three generations of family that has been privileged to be loved by him. He is survived by his wife, Jeannette Elizabeth DeVane, his daughters Jackie Lewis and Dianne Brost, his sons-in-law Craig Lewis and Jerry Brost, grandsons Josh and Phillip Lewis and their wives, Carly and Sarah, Zachary Yarbrough and his wife Missy, granddaughters Natalie Yarbrough, Amy Forrester and her husband Chase, and nine great grandchildren.
Our greatest comfort is knowing he is at peace and residing with Our Lord.
