Jimmy Edward Grant, 77, of Oakwood, passed away on Monday, September 2, after an extended illness surrounded by family and loved ones.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Friday, September 6, 2024 in the Chapel of Memorial Park Funeral Home. Rev. Clyde Self and Rev. Charles Edward Grant, Jr., will officiate. Interment will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. The family will receive friends at Memorial Park Funeral Home on Thursday, September 5th from 2:00 until 4:00 p.m. and from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m.
Born into a military family on March 31, 1947, in Gainesville, GA, Jimmy was a combat veteran who proudly served two tours in the United States Air Force. He flew in the Stinger AC-119 gunships in Vietnam, once being forced down in the jungle overnight while awaiting rescue by chopper.
Jimmy retired from General Motors where he served as a UAW representative on the National Veterans Advisory Committee. In the 1990’s he championed improvements to the VA Hospital rooms with color television installations, providing more comfort to our heroes receiving care.
He was one of the original members of “LZ Friendly”, a non-profit organization that hosts reunions for veterans, families and friends. Located in Danielsville, GA, LZ Friendly provides a safe space for veterans to gather, support and fellowship with other veterans. He also regularly attended Veteran’s Day events in Washington, DC, representing Vietnam Veterans.
Mr. Grant was a member of Chicopee Baptist Church. Jimmy’s love of music and outgoing personality led him to operate a mobile DJ service (Music Man Productions) in the Gainesville area for many years.
In addition to his parents, Charles Edward, Sr. and Alma Grant, Jimmy was preceded in death by his son, Bradley Edward Grant.
He is survived by his devoted wife of 54 years, Teresa Turner Grant and son, Chad Edward Grant both of Oakwood; daughter in law, Jennifer Grant ; grandsons, Austin Varno (Skylar), Wyatt Grant (Makayla); great grandchildren, Caleb, Bentley, Lilly and Bellah; brother, Rev. Charles Edward Grant, Jr. (Donna); sister, Carolyn Grant Ahrens (Mark); sister in law, Vivian Dover (James) and brother in law, Donald Turner (Darcy) and numerous nieces, nephews cousins and loving relatives.
