Larry Eugene Anderson

Let your light so shine among others that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in Heaven.”  (Mathew 5:16)  Larry Anderson was one of God’s shining lights - a man of faith, family, and service --proud father, dedicated husband, staunchly loyal and devoted friend.

Larry Eugene Anderson was born in Summerville, Georgia on July 20, 1940. He died August 20, 2024 in Gainesville, Georgia.  His last four days were filled with meaningful visits from his children, ALL of his grandchildren and dear friends.

  Larry was happiest when he was helping others -- family, community, friends and church. He was incredibly generous, and people were drawn to his strength and loyalty.  Larry cared deeply for his large extended family and was steadfast in his support. One could always pick up the phone and ask Larry for suggestions and ideas about solving a particular problem. He was greatly devoted to and appreciative of family and friends.  Larry and his kind and generous heart will be missed by all who loved him.

He attended Armuchee High School where he played baseball, basketball and ran track.  He graduated from Berry College with a degree in math and physics.  After college he lived in Atlanta and worked for Southern Bell while attending Georgia Tech working on a masters degree.  Larry accepted a job with DeKalb County Schools as Director of Information Systems and after 32 years of service, retired in 1999. 

He was preceded in death by his parents, Charles Stephenson Anderson and Ruby Fay Lewis Anderson, and his brother, Burrell Anderson.

Larry’s faith was important to him.  He grew up in the Baptist Church, taking part in services. At Decatur First Christian Church he served as Deacon, Elder, Chairman of the Board, and Trustee. He was an active member of Clayton First United Methodist Church where he served as trustee, on numerous committees and helped to prepare and serve Wednesday Night Suppers.

 Larry was deeply admired and loved by his colleagues, friends and family. He was generous with both his love and time, caring deeply about giving to his community and engaging in a variety of endeavors.  He was an active volunteer with HIM (Home Improvement Mission Group).  He faithfully served as the crew chief of handicapped ramps.  He also served on the Board of FAITH (Fight Abuse in the Home). 

He and Sally were married at Decatur First Christian Church on July 5, 1975.  They moved from Avondale Estates to Rabun County in 2004. Larry’s happiness on his beloved Lake Burton was evident, and he enjoyed taking people out on his boat to have them experience aspects of the joy of living on the Lake. 

Larry was honest and fiercely loyal and loved his friends from DeKalb County as well as his new friends in Rabun County, and, more recently, his newer friends at Lanier Village Estates.  Family and friends will remember him as fun loving with a sense of humor.

His greatest love was his family, including his beloved dogs.  He and Sally shared their lives with a series of much loved Boston Terriers, and more recently with Suzy and Barney.  As family patriarch, he led by example and instilled family values.  He was proud of the wonderful young people Mandy and Tommy brought into the world.  His grandchildren were gifted by his teachings, life lessons and practical information which he so generously shared.  He taught them the importance of working hard to make the world a better place. 

He is survived by his wife of 49 years, Sally Carmack Anderson; his daughter Mona Anderson Stevens (Mandy) and her husband, Geoff Stevens; his son Thomas Walter Brooks (Tommy) and his wife Michelle Sciullo Brooks; and grandchildren Grant, Nicole, Clay, Ben, Abby and Sam Stevens; and Blake Brooks.  Last but not least, his beloved little dog, Suzy, will miss him greatly.

Friends and family are invited to a memorial service held at Lanier Village Estates at 2:00 on September 28, 2024.
