Charlie Allen Smith

Mr. Charlie Allen Smith, age 85, of Nicholson, GA passed away on Thursday, August 22, 2024 at Brookside Senior Living, Commerce. Mr. Smith was the son of the late Curtis and Bessie Smith. Mr. Smith was preceded in death by his wife, Jackie Delores Smith and daughter, Vicki Lynn Howington.

Mr. and Mrs. Smith owned and operated the Nicholson Café, Smith’s Wrecker Service and Smith’s Auto Parts for many years.

In 1972, Mr. Smith along with other citizens of Nicholson, help establish the Nicholson Area Fire Department just months after the Benton School burned to the ground. Mr. Smith became the first fire chief for the Nicholson Area Fire Department and served until 1998.

Mr. Smith is survived by two grandchildren, Charles Howington and Holly Beal; and four great-grandchildren, Gavin Howington, Marcus Howington, Declan Beal and Rachel Beal.

Funeral services will be at 3 PM, Sunday, August 25 at the chapel of Little-Ward Funeral Home with Rev. David Carithers officiating. Interment will follow in Howington Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 1 to 3 PM Sunday. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Nicholson Area Fire Rescue,P.O. Box 188, Nicholson, GA 30565, in memory of Chief Charlie Smith.
