Mary Elizabeth Strickland transitioned into eternal peace Friday, August 9, 2024, at NewHorizon - Habersham Nursing Home in Demorest, Georgia. Mary Strickland, who was affectionately known as "Libby" and to her Granddaughter as "Ganny". Lib was born to the late Maynard and Essie Mae Brown, Sr.in Gainesville, Georgia on August 18, 1938. Libby graduated from Fair Street High school in Gainesville, GA. She attended the former Hampton Institute - now Hampton University in Hampton Virginia. Libby moved to New York to live briefly and then moved to Atlanta Georgia. There she met Mr. Eddie Strickland. Soon, they got married and out of that union their son Brandon was born. Later Libby moved back to Gainesville and worked at her father's grocery store " Yank Brown's Groceries" and eventually began her home daycare service until her retirement. Libby leaves to cherish her memories Granddaughter Kennedy Strickland and a host of Nephews and Nieces and a Great Niece and a Great Nephew. Libby was preceded in death by her father Maynard Brown, Sr. and Mother Essie Mae Brown. Her husband Eddie Strickland and her son Brandon Strickland and her Two brothers ( COL.) Maynard Brown, Jr. and (SGT.) L. C. Brown, United States Army. “In lieu of flowers the family requests that monetary donations be rendered to the family” The proceeds shall go towards Ms. Mary Strickland Granddaughters college scholarship.
Funeral service will be held on Saturday, August 17, 2024, at Saint John Baptist Church, Gainesville, GA at 11:00 AM. A viewing will be held on Friday, August 16, 2024, at Wimberly Funeral Home between the hours of 4:00 PM - 8:00 PM. The family will receive friends between 7:00 PM - 8:00 PM.
