Karol Jan Sulimirski

Obituary Date: Monday, August 5, 2024

Karol Jan Sulimirski of Auburn, GA passed away on August 5, 2024 at the age of eighty-eight.

His cherished memory is carried on by his children, Roger (Jacksonville, FL), Mark and wife Tessa (Auburn, GA), Renata and husband Larry (Warwick, NY), seven grandchildren, three great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews. Karol is predeceased by his wife of 55 years, Krystyna (Kris) Sulimirski, daughter-in-law, Pamela Sulimirski, and grandson, Justin Dwyer.

Karol (“Lolo”) was born on May 13, 1936 in Lwow, Poland to Tadeusz and Olga Sulimirski. During his childhood, he lived through the occupation of Poland during World War II and escaped to London. He enjoyed Polish Scouts and attended school at Ampleforth. He graduated from London University as a chemical engineer and married his beloved Kris after a brief courtship on January 20, 1962. Their sons, Roger and Mark, were born before moving to New Jersey in 1966 where their daughter, Renata, was born.

Karol worked as an engineer at several companies in New York and New Jersey including Elan Chemicals, where he worked for 25 years. Throughout this time, he was an involved father and uncle. Amidst the chaos of daily fist fights between the boys and Renata’s screams, he would peacefully read his newspaper and complete his crossword puzzle. He was always the calm in the eye of the storm that was the Sulimirski household.

Karol and Kris retired in 1998 and moved to Murphy, NC and later to Auburn, GA in 2014. They enjoyed their retirement together by traveling, sailing, hiking, visiting friends, and spoiling their grandchildren. Their timeless love was demonstrated by Karol’s devoted care for Kris in the years she was ill until her passing in 2017.

Karol’s passions including sailing, cars, Polish history, and preserving family memories. He found great joy from the wind in his sails or watching a car race – traits he certainly passed down through the generations. He worked diligently to help preserve his childhood home in Poland, Kobylany, and loved telling stories to his family accompanied with shots of ?ubrówka. He was a faithful Catholic who was a member of Prince of Peace Catholic Church in Flowery Branch, GA. Karol was the epitome of good, honest man who built a life full of love and laughter. We will always be thankful for his presence and the lessons we have learned from him. We find peace in knowing he is up above dancing with the love of his life.

Visitation will be held at Memorial Park South in Flowery Branch, GA on Friday August 9,2024 from 4:00 to 6:00pm followed by a prayer service. The funeral mass will be held at Prince of Peace Catholic Church in Flowery Branch, GA on Saturday August 10 at 11:30am. Family, friends, and others whose lives Karol touched are welcome to attend.
