Tyrus Gene Smith

Mr. Tyrus Gene Smith, age 81 of Toccoa passed away Monday, August 5, 2024 at his residence.

A son of the late Hoyt Newberry Smith and Veneeta Whiten Smith, he was born May 18, 1943 in Stephens County, Georgia having lived in Franklin County, Georgia for many years before moving to Stephens County in 2008.  He lived with his grandfather, Spencer Smith during his early childhood. He proudly served as a member of the United States Armed Forces, honorably discharged from the United States Army on November 30, 1965.  He was a professional truck driver having worked and retired from Brown Transport and later with Gordon Garner Trucking.  He was a member of Grove Lodge #652 and attended Old Liberty Baptist Church.  His hobbies included watching the University of Georgia football games, Atlanta Braves Baseball and Nascar races but his greatest joy was spending time with his family. 

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brothers, Forrest Smith, Bruce Smith and Roy Smith; grandson, Jamerson Bryer Kerby and by two brothers-in-law, Kenneth Cobb and Bill Kellett.

Survivors include his wife of 61 years and “Sunshine” of his life, Bonnie Spencer Smith; sons, Bryan and Kim Smith and Jeff Smith both of Toccoa; daughter, Tami Kerby of Warner Robbins, Georgia; grandchildren, Ty and Laci Smith, Spencer and Erica Smith, Hoyt and Georgia Smith, Kiefer and Sinclair Smith, Karly Smith and Hudson Kerby; great-grandchildren, Trey Smith, June Smith, Avery Smith, Parker Smith and Annie Smith; brothers and sisters-in-law, Leon Smith, Johnny and Jackie Smith, David and Gail Smith and Larry and Buena Smith; sisters and brother-in-law, Glenda Kellett, Brenda Cobb and Connie and Cecil Nicholson; sisters-in-law, Doris Smith, Yvonne Smith and Doris Spencer Jarrett.

Graveside services will be Friday, August 9, 2024, 3 o’clock p.m. at Stephens Memorial Gardens with The Reverend Mark Nelson officiating.  The following gentlemen will serve as pallbearers, Kiefer Smith, Hudson Kerby, Dalton Duke, Cody Smith, Leon Smith, Jr. and Jamie Kerby.

The family will receive friends at the Acree-Davis Funeral Home on Friday from 1 p.m. until 2:30 p.m.  Online condolences may be left for the family at www.acree-davisfh.com.

Interment will follow in the Stephens Memorial Gardens with the Acree-Davis Funeral Home and Crematory in charge of the arrangements for Mr. Tyrus Gene Smith.
