Sandra Jane McCellan Hughes

Obituary Date: Friday, August 2, 2024

Sandra Jane McClellan Hughes passed away August 2, 2024, at 81 years of age.

She was born January 17, 1943, in Seneca, South Carolina.  She was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Norcross.

Sandra grew up in Newry, South Carolina where most of her family and lifelong friends lived.  She graduated from Seneca High School in 1961 and was a majorette and on the homecoming court.  She married her high school sweetheart, Howard, in 1965.  They went on to have two daughters, Leanne and Lori.

When Leanne and Lori were young, she worked at Norcross Elementary School.  As they got older, she was employed by Domtar Industries in the sales department.  She eventually retired from Georgia Pacific.

Sandra made all of our clothes when we were young, and she made all of Barbie’s clothes as well.  She never missed a sporting event or a piano recital.  She was instrumental in starting the neighborhood swim teams with Howard at both Edgemoor North and Nantucket.  She adored her grandchildren and continued to cheer them on at every event they participated in as well.

She was beautiful, kind, smart, caring, patient, and so very witty.

She is survived by her daughters; Leanne (Todd) Bonsack and Lori (John) Blanchard, grandchildren; Mac (Kelsey) Bonsack, Mia Bonsack, Mitchell (Katie) Blanchard, and Kate (Aaron) Schmitz, along with several nieces and nephews that she held dear to her heart.  Sandra was preceded in death by her husband, Howard Hughes, her parents, Mose and Barbara McClellan, and her sister Gail (Billy) Taylor.

We would like to express our sincere gratitude to Veronica and Keisha at Georgia Hospice for the love and care they showed her, to the nurses and staff at the Mansions at Gwinnett Park for the kindness and support, and to Pam and Shelby at the Weston Group for their love and humor.

A Celebration of Life will be held on Friday, August 23rd at her home at 520 White Ridge Trace in Lawrenceville from 4-7 pm.  A graveside memorial will be held on August 24th at 1 pm at Oconee Memorial Park, 1923 Blue Ridge Blvd, Seneca, South Carolina, 29678.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to an animal rescue of your choice or to Georgia Hospice Care at hpcfoundation.org.
