McFarlane, Muriel Arline (Nana)

Age 100 passed into the house of the Lord on July 5^th. Muriel was born and grew up in East Greenwich, Rhode Island where she and her older sister Kay were raised by paternal grandparents after the early death of both their parents. Muriel graduated high school at St. Xavier Academy, Providence, R.I. and served as a volunteer at a local USO Club where she met her future husband, James L. McFarlane during WW II. After discharge from the Navy James and Muriel moved to Wilmington, NC where they started a family consisting of James Jr, Margaret (Peggy) and Larry McFarlane. The family moved frequently throughout the South as James Sr. pursued business opportunities and Muriel devoted herself to raising their children.

In later years Muriel proved to be an accomplished artist producing superb landscape scenes particularly ocean and seascape paintings. She also had a beautiful voice and would spontaneously sing whenever the spirit moved her as she went about her daily activities. After her children became adults, Muriel worked ten years in the St. Petersburg, Florida Probation Office of the Florida Department of Corrections. She was predeceased by her husband, James Sr., in 1991.

This past April “Nana” celebrated her 100^th birthday with her three children, eight grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren, three great-great-grandchildren and many friends.  She basked in the loving attention of her family and remarked that aside from the birth of her children, “it was the happiest day of her life.” Mom was a true Believer and is now united with her Lord as we celebrate her life.

A Celebration of Life will be held on Sunday, July 21, 2024 at 11:30 a.m., in the Chapel of Flanigan Funeral Home, Buford, GA, with Rev. Jimmy Orr officiating.  The family will receive friend, on Sunday, July 21, 2024 from 10:00 a.m. until the time of service at 11:30 a.m. at the funeral home.
