William Leon Davis

Obituary Date: Tuesday, July 9, 2024

Mr. William Leon Davis, age 91, of Dahlonega, went home to be with the Lord Jesus on Tuesday, July 9, 2024.

Leon was born in the Concord Community of Lumpkin County, Georgia, on January 18, 1933, to the late Lonnie D Davis and Oma Truphenia Grizzle Davis. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Rufus L. Davis, and sister, Sammie Lane Davis.
Leon graduated from Lumpkin County High School in 1948 and attended Pickens and Lanier area Vocational Schools. Leon served in the United States Army Reserves (Active Duty) from 1953 to 1955 and was stationed in France, where he was injured on duty. He worked with Dahlonega Feed and Poultry Company from 1955 to 1982 as an Accountant / Bookkeeper.

In 1976, Leon was appointed to the Board of Directors with Amicalola Electric Membership Cooperative to represent Lumpkin County and served over 43 years as a board member. In 1996, Leon was appointed to the United Community Bank Local Board and served over 20 years as a board member. Leon’s civic involvement includes membership in the Dahlonega – Lumpkin County Chamber of Commerce, The American Legion and, the Lumpkin County Retired Teachers Association, and Disabled American Veterans. Leon was a member of Yahoola Baptist Church for 74 years.

Leon was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. He never complained about the trials that this life can bring. He enjoyed working in his yard and garden, eating ripe watermelons, and just sitting in the yard talking with friends and neighbors. 

He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Jean Davis, son Edwin Davis (Debbie), Grandson Chris Gilbert (Mandy), and great-grandchildren Hayden Gilbert and Annalee Gilbert, all of Dahlonega.

A heartfelt thank you to the team of caregivers who provided an outstanding level of care to Leon during his declining health:  Jeannine Burt, Mary Chism, Anita Castleberry, Amy Grissom, Lexie Aaron, Amy Hunter, Sandy Martin, and the team at Hospice of Northeast Georgia Medical Center.

The family will receive friends for a celebration of Leon’s life on Wednesday, July 10, 2024, from 5:00 pm until 8:00 pm. Funeral services will be held on Thursday, July 11, 2024, at 2:00 pm in the Anderson Underwood Funeral Home Chapel with the Reverend Lyman Caldwell and the Reverend Chris Gilbert officiating. Burial will follow at the Yahoola Baptist Church Cemetery following the service with full military honors.
