Violet Montine Mavis

Obituary Date: Monday, June 17, 2024

Violet Montine Mavis, age 98, went to be with her Lord and Savior on June 17, 2024.

She was born on March 27, 1926 in LaGrange, Georgia to the late Robert Edward Sharp and Clara India (Shubert) Sharp, who were parents of 10 children, (Montine being next to the youngest). She was preceded in death by all of her brothers and sisters, and all of their spouses. By the time Montine was 13 years old, her parents passed away. So, oldest sister Stella, along with her husband, became “parents” to Montine and youngest sister Clarine. Montine graduated in 1945 from Deep Creek High School in Chesapeake, Virginia. Soon after graduating, she met, fell in love with, and just knew she was going to marry Carrol A. Mavis, a Navy corpsman from Duluth, Minnesota, who was stationed at the U.S. Navy Hospital in Portsmouth, Virginia. They got married on March 28, 1947 at Zion Lutheran Church in Duluth, Minnesota. On August 7, 1948, son Scott was born, and soon after on October 15, 1949, son Bill was born. Montine was a loving wife and mother, always making sure her family was the best that they all could be. She was an active member of the Sweet Adelines International chapter in Duluth. Montine and Carrol were also members of Zion’s church choir until Carrol’s job transfer took the family to Columbus, Ohio in 1959. Because of their love of singing, the Mavis family became their own barbershop quartet, singing at church functions and family gatherings.

Soon after arriving in Columbus, Montine (“Vi” as she was known at work), began her career at Western Electric, where she and Carrol both retired (Carrol in 1980 and Montine in 1982). After retirement, they relocated to Gainesville, Georgia. When Carrol passed away on August 28, 2016, they had been married over 69 years. Montine is survived by her son Scott and daughter-in-law Elizabeth; son Bill, and daughter-in-law Bonnie, grandsons Bryan (Stacie) Mavis, Kevin (Emily McSherry) Mavis, Andy (Brianna) Mavis, granddaughter Leslie (Todd) Biggs, great-grandchildren Gabe Mavis, Emily Mavis, Aidan Biggs, Lauren Mavis, Allison “Alli” Biggs and step-great-granddaughter Nola Robertson.

Montine’s memorial service will be held at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, 600 S. Enota Drive., Gainesville, Georgia 30501, at a later date.

Inurnment will be at Memorial Park Cemetery in Gainesville, Georgia, and will be a private gathering to celebrate Montine’s life for immediate family members only.
