Charles Richard "Mutt" Townsend

Charles Richard "Mutt" Townsend, 80 of Oakwood passed away Monday May 27, 2024, at Northeast Georgia Medical Center-Gainesville.

Charles was born February 23, 1944, in Gainesville, Ga. to Elizabeth Patterson Townsend and Lanier Townsend. He attended Gainesville City Schools, honorably discharged from the GA National Guard during the Vietnam War Era. He worked with the Hall County Civil Defense, served on the Board of Directors for the Girls and Boys Club and was President of the Hall County Jaycees along with other Jaycee offices.

In 1971, Charles was 1 of 10 men chosen to represent Georgia as Outstanding Young Men of America. While serving as President of the Jaycees, he joined forces with, at the time, Governor Jimmy Carter to help carry out special projects throughout Hall County.

In 1976, Charles was in the first graduating class of EMT's for the State of Georgia. His EMT# was 191 out of 200 graduates.

Another first for Hall County, in 1979, Charles partnered with Danny Baugh to establish the very first Non-Emergency Ambulance Service.

In 2021, Charles was recognized and received a certificate of achievement for 50 years of service from the Georgia Funeral Directors Association. In the 57 years as a Funeral Director, he had the honor of serving families from all walks of life.

Charles was preceded in death by his parents, 2 brothers, Sid Townsend, Bob Townsend and 1 sister, Jean Mote.

Charles is survived by his loving wife of 60 years, Phyllis Brewer Townsend, his two daughters and sons-in-law, Sandy Townsend Moore (Roger), Susan Townsend Barrett (Jim) and his son and daughter-in-law, Charles Phillip (Chase Crenshaw) Townsend. Four grandsons, Joseph and Jacob Barrett of Lilburn, Samuel Barrett of Valdosta, and Stephen Moore of Oakwood.  His fur baby "Chance", Several Nieces, Nephews and cousins, plus his loving community of Oakwood Springs.

Funeral services will be held Friday May 31, 2024, at 11:00 a.m. in the chapel of Little & Davenport Funeral Home. Rev. Kenny Williamson will officiate.  Interment will follow at the Alta Vista Cemetery. The family will receive friends at Little & Davenport Funeral Home Thursday May 30 from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m.

Flowers will be accepted, but those desiring may make memorial contributions to St. Jude Children's Hospital in memory of Mr. Townsend.
