Charlie Joel (Jody) Lail, Jr., age 62, of Buford, passed away on May 18, 2024, after a long battle with glioblastoma.
Jody graduated from the United States Military Academy at West Point and the Georgia State University College of Law. He served five years on active duty in the Army as an Engineer Officer, then began his career as a banker while continuing to serve in the Georgia National Guard until he retired from military service in 2004. He worked for Trust Company Bank of Cobb County, SunTrust Bank, and Quantum National Bank. In 2007, he achieved his dream of opening a bank when he became the President & CEO of Chattahoochee Bank of Georgia when it opened in Gainesville.
Jody was diagnosed with glioblastoma in 2016. Although the average life expectancy is 12-18 months, Jody joined a group of fewer than 1% who survive eight years or more. While there were many ups and downs, Jody was able to enjoy more years than he had ever expected. In 2017, he worked to facilitate the sale of Chattahoochee Bank to Entegra and continued in a part-time role until 2019. He continued to work part-time as he was able with Carroll Daniel Construction and, most recently, with The Peoples Bank of Eatonton.
He was preceded in death by his father-in-law and mother-in-law, Hulon and Peggy Teague Garner.
Jody is survived by his wife of 26 years, Nancy Garner Lail; sons Chad and Jack Lail; sister-in-law Stephanie (Brandy) Humphrey; parents Charlie and Carol Lail; siblings Chris (Karla) Lail, Patrick (Charlotte) Lail, and Betsy (Dave) Fitzhenry; and several nieces and nephews.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the West Point Association of Graduates, the American Brain Tumor Foundation, or Georgia Baptist Children’s Home and Family Ministries.
We are thankful for the village God assembled to help us through this journey. My family, friends, co-workers, and GAC moms met every need. We are eternally grateful for your help and support.
A Memorial Service will be held at Ivy Creek Baptist Church in Buford, Georgia, on Saturday, June 15th, at 2:00 PM, with a reception following in the Fellowship Hall.
Flanigan Funeral Home in Buford is in charge of arrangements.
