John Calvin Duane, III

Obituary Date: Friday, May 10, 2024

John Calvin Duane, III, a remarkable husband, father, brother, and friend gently left this world on March 10th . He was surrounded by family, scripture, prayer, and song. He left behind a legacy of love, wisdom, laughter, and cherished memories that will resonate in the hearts of his family and friends.

As a devoted husband to Norma Jean, he supported his bride of almost seventy- two years with love and attention. She was his partner in love, adventures, and service to others. She was the center of his world. His love for her never faltered, even when faced with patience-trying health issues. He was a rock upon which she and his whole family leaned and the embodiment of love that is patient and kind.

He was also the epitome of a Girl Dad, even before such a thing prompted a t-shirt. Whether it was building playhouses, donning a tutu, attending thousands of Rainbow Girl functions, or taking wood shop classes at night, he gave us his time and attention and always gave us the impression that there was nothing else he would rather be doing. He never spoke of any of the sacrifices he made for his daughters Brenda Barger, Dorene Glynn, and Penny Maxson. He expanded that love to include his sons-in-law Brett, Steve, and Brent.

His role extended far beyond that of a father. He stepped eagerly into the role of PaPa to Brett Colley, Travis Colley, Tyler Maxson, Lindsey Lazowick, Cody Barger, and Shea Barger who loved him for his playful spirit, his boundless patience, and the love he bestowed on them and later their spouses whom he welcomed as if they had always been a part of the family. He effortlessly embraced his role of PaPa to his twelve great-grandchildren who always brought a smile to his face.

His family also includes surviving sisters Betty Jones and Patti Duane and his brother Tommy Duane whom he loved and about whom he never stopped worrying in his role as oldest brother. He cherished their phone calls and visits.

Jack was not only a family man, but also a friend to many, and a man of service. He never forgot those with whom he had worked at the JEA and the JPA and told stories of his pranks and the humor he shared with his friends, some of whom he adopted as family. He was also a member of many service organizations including the Florida Air National Guard, Masons, Kiwanis, and Rotary. For years he had his annual Christmas cold after filling the key role of Santa’s helper in the elementary schools. A servant leader in the churches that he attended, he was a ready volunteer and was known for his fish fries, cook-outs, and breakfasts.

Jack touched the lives of many and will be remembered for his dedication, his quiet humor, his humility, and his tireless commitment to making the world a better place. His spirit lives on in the hearts of those he loved and who loved him in return. His legacy of love, wisdom, and kindness will continue to guide and inspire.

A Memorial Service will be held June 1st., at 11 am in the Chapel of Gainesville First United Methodist Church. Memorials can be made in his name to the church’s Memorial Fund.
