James M. Nelms Sr.

JAMES M. NELMS SR. (1945 – 2024) James “Jimmy” Nelms, Sr., 79, of Athens, GA passed peacefully at home on May 10, 2024, surrounded by his loving family and loyal canine companion, Rusty. Jimmy was born April 14, 1945 in Athens to Major Guy and Lola Garrison Nelms. He arrived in this world, simultaneously with his twin brother, Johnny Nelms. He joined the United States Navy in 1963 where he proudly served his Country during the Vietnam War until 1967. He then married the love of his life, Martha (Elrod) Nelms. They had two children, J. Michael (Shannon) Nelms, Jr. of Watkinsville GA and Doug (Judy) Nelms of Athens GA. They shared 57 devoted years to one another. Jimmy was employed by Pepsi-Cola for over 30 years.  In retirement, he enjoyed  time with his family, watching the Braves and loved animals. He is survived by his devoted wife, his children, grandchildren, Brooklynn Nelms of Wilmington NC,  Avery Nelms of Athens GA,  Rhett (Victoria) Vanderford of Jefferson GA, twin brother Johnny (Sara) Nelms of Athens GA, sister Joan Whitehead of Bishop GA and numerous nieces / nephews. He was preceded in death by his sister, Helen Tanksley.

The family is honored to have Stacy Davis, Jeff Brock, Mike Fields, Emmett Robertson, Dwight Page and Jimbo Arnold serve as pallbearers.

Visitation will be Sunday May 12 from 6-8 at Evans Funeral Home and funeral service Monday @11am with Rev. Matt Dibler officiating. Internment to follow @ Evergreen in Athens.
