Colonel Joseph H. Goble of Gainesville, Georgia, passed away peacefully in the early morning hours of May 8, 2024.
He was born on April 15, 1934 in the south Gilmer County community of Whitestone, GA., a product of generations in the North Georgia Mountains. An only child to Joseph Goble, Sr. and Eva Tatum Goble, he graduated from Gilmer High school at the age of 14 and went to the University of Georgia at age 15. After graduating from UGA, he entered the Air Force as a commissioned officer. A chance meeting at the public pool in Jasper, GA, introduced Joe to the love of his life, Roxilea Jones. Their marriage brought 3 children. He found enjoyment in piloting jets and steadily advanced through the ranks from Pilot, Squadron Commander and beyond. His career in the Air Force took him all over the world, with multiple deployments in Vietnam and later a 2 year deployment in the Canadian Air Force. Moving the entire family every 2 to 4 years was sometimes difficult but ultimately vastly rewarding. In 1980 he retired as a full Colonel to the family lake house on Lake Lanier in Gainesville, GA. Joe and Roxie were married 64 years before her passing in 2021.
Joe is preceded in death by his wife, Roxilea Jones and son, Joseph H. Goble III. He is survived by his son Henry Goble (Ann) of Gainesville, GA and daughter, Roxann Manley of Hull, GA. Grandchildren Ava Goble Reeves (Harrison) of Atlanta, GA; Jackson Goble of Sandy Springs, GA; Michael Manley of Flowery Branch, GA; Elizabeth Manley of Canton, GA; and several great grandchildren.
Memorial services will be held Monday, May 13 at 2:00 pm at Grace Episcopal Church of Gainesville, GA, with a reception following in the church Parish Hall. The graveside service will be at Georgia National Cemetery, Canton GA, for family members, on May 14 at 10:30 am.
