Lyman Perry Matheson

Obituary Date: Saturday, March 30, 2024

On Saturday March 30th, 2024, at the time the closing whistle would blow at his furniture manufacturing plant, the Lord called Lyman Perry Matheson to be with him.  Mr. Matheson, born February 17, 1934, passed away peacefully with his loving wife of 68 years, his children and sister by his side.

Mr. Matheson was born in Toccoa, Georgia the son of Lyman and Capie Matheson and the grandson of W.A. Matheson, who was one of the founding fathers of Toccoa and a founding member of the First Presbyterian Church of Toccoa. He was a life-long resident of Toccoa where he owned Lyman Matheson Furniture, Inc. located on Collins Road.

He was a graduate of Toccoa High School. He attended North Carolina State University and served in the United States Army, posted in Germany. After his service, Mr. Matheson returned to Toccoa to operate the furniture plant, which he did until he retired. After the closure of his business, Mr. Matheson enjoyed managing the pro shop at Toccoa Golf Course for many years. He was a lifelong member and served as a Trustee, Elder and Deacon of the First Presbyterian Church. He also served as Treasurer of the Northeast Georgia Campfire Association, on the Boards of the Salvation Army, and of Stephens Federal Savings and Loan. When he was not serving his community, Mr. Matheson could be found enjoying time with friends as a member of the Toccoa Country Club and Elks Lodge, attending University of Georgia football games, watching the Atlanta Braves, attending his children’s activities, working in his garden or boating on Lake Hartwell. 

Mr. Matheson was the beloved husband of Barbara Matheson; devoted father of Courtney M. Williams (husband, Bill), Leigh M. Andrews (husband, Mike) and Douglas Perry Matheson (wife, Astrid aka AK); Cherished grandfather of Fletcher Williams, Olivia Williams, Katherine Andrews Hagen (husband, Jack), Caroline Andrews, and Andrew D. Matheson; Dedicated brother of Jan Matheson Rowell. He is also survived by many other loving family members.

Celebration of Life to be held at  Toccoa Presbyterian Church on Friday, April 5, 2024 at 11:00 a.m. with The Reverend Phil Hargrove, Mr. Douglas Matheson and Mr. Ron Matheson officiating. The following gentlemen will serve as pallbearers, Fletcher Williams, Andrew Matheson, Jack Hagen, Cecil Boyd, Wiley Winters and Brent Ware.

The family will receive friends at the Acree-Davis Funeral Home on Thursday, April 4, 2024 from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. Online condolences may be left for the family at www.acree-davisfh.com.

In lieu of flowers the family requests that memorial donations may be to the Toccoa Presbyterian Church, P.O. Box 367, Toccoa Georgia 30577 in memory of Lyman Perry Matheson.

Interment will follow at Stephens Memorial Gardens with the Acree-Davis Funeral Home and Crematory in charge of the arrangements for Mr. Lyman Perry Matheson.
