Marie Jane Wood Perry, 82, entered into rest on Thursday, February 15, 2024.
Born October 29, 1941 to Joe Brown and Alma Short Wood, she was born and raised in Commerce, GA, where she graduated in 1959 from Commerce High School, with honors. She met her late husband and love of her life, Wendell Stovall (Doc) Perry, in the fall of 1957, when Maysville School consolidated with Commerce High School. Marie would go into Doc’s typing class and practice typing for State Literary Meet and would talk to him and try to set him up with other girls. She continued flirting with Doc after he graduated, when she would go to the gas station where he worked to buy a nickel’s worth of gas. The two were engaged in December 1961 and married on April 5, 1962 and made Gainesville their home. The two welcomed twin daughters in June 1969, and a third daughter in June 1974.
Marie was a homemaker until 1979, when she went to work part-time at Lanier Elementary School. She later began working for Eades Treasures for Your Home, where she remained employed until they closed in 2011. In her retirement, she enjoyed caring for her grandchildren, as well as lunches and shopping trips with friends. Marie was a member of Lakewood Baptist Church, where she sang in the sanctuary choir and was an active member of the Adam and Eve Sunday School Class.
Marie was proceeded in death by her parents, her infant daughter, Dell Marie Perry, and her loving husband of 61 years, Wendell Stovall (Doc) Perry. She is survived by her daughters Lee Anne (Dan) McGill, North Augusta, SC and Susan (Ted) Hughes, Maryville, TN, grandchildren Kelsey Marie Hughes, Cooper Andrew McGill, Cassidy Elizabeth McGill and James Alan Hughes, and sisters Barbara Wood Adams and Carolyn Wood Hayes.
A celebration of life will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, March 2, 2024 at Lakewood Baptist Church with Dr. Tom Smiley, Dr. Tyler Smiley and Rev. Don Ormsbee officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service.
