Martin (Marty) R. Waschak

Obituary Date: Friday, February 23, 2024
Gainesville, Georgia: Martin (Marty) R. Waschak passed away at home surrounded by family on February 23, 2024. He will be sadly missed but fondly remembered by all who knew and loved
him. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at the Good Shepard Catholic Church located at 3740 Holtzclaw Road, Cumming, Georgia at 1pm on Friday, March 1, 2024. The family will
receive friends prior to the service in the narthex of the church.Marty was born in Youngstown, Ohio on January 3, 1934. The son of the late Martin M. and Helen (Sofranko) Waschak. He was a graduate of Chaney High School in Youngstown. Marty attended Kent state University, Case Western Reserve and graduated from Youngstown State University with a BS degree in accounting and economics. Martin was in the Air Force ROTC and was the President of the Phi Delta Tau accounting honors fraternity at Youngstown State.
For two years, Marty served in the US Army during which time he was deployed to Greenland as part of the 1 st Engineer Arctic Task Force. He participated in the early construction of Camp
TUTO, Thule Air Base, and what would later be Camp Century. He was the first radio operator to travel and set up a base command post in the middle of one of the crevasses. He also
supported the then secret testing of the gyrocompasses that would eventually be installed in and guide the Nautilus Nuclear Submarine in the first ever transit under the noth polar icecap.
After returning from military service, he worked for the US Steel Corporation for 10 yearsmoving through various management / corporate positions. Marty left US Steel for Emerson
Electric, Cromalox Division in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. In 1974 he was recruited by the Lithonia Lighting Company in Conyers, Georgia. He held several management positions over 25 years
finally retiring as Vice President and Treasurer. Under his management the company grew into a multibillion-dollar corporation.
Marty is survived by his wife of 62 years Patti (Joy) Waschak, his sons Michael R. Waschak of Gainesville, Georgia, Mark A. (& Mary) Waschak of Cohutta, Georgia and Marty R. (& Lisa)
Waschak II of Clarksville, Georgia, and his daughter Michelle J. Waschak (& Cecil) of Columbia, South Carolina, his additionally chosen son and daughter Thomas Golden and Elizabeth
Murchison, his two granddaughters; Amanda Danielle, (& James) Kauffmann of Atlanta, Georgia and Lauren Brooke Waschak of Charlestown, South Carolina, his sister-in-law Barbara Waschak,
and brother-in-law Michael Joy of Austintown, Ohio and several beloved nieces and nephews.
 
Marty was preceded in death by his sister Deloris and brother-in-law Eugene Zurawick of Youngstown, Ohio, and his brother Jim Waschak of Poland, Ohio.
