John B. Corley

Mr. John B. Corley was born August 8, 1939 to Hoyt and Edna Corley in Atlanta, GA. He attended school through second grade in Atlanta before moving to Powder Springs, GA. After six years living on a small farm. He moved to Decatur, GA and attended Avondale High School. He developed a core for athletics having lettered in baseball, football, and basketball at Avondale.

After spending a tour with the United States Air Force; John married Sue McMahan and became father to three sons, John Brooks Corley, Jr., Joseph Brian Corley and James Benjamin Corley. He attended Reinhardt College, Ga State College (B.S.), University of Tennessee (Masters in Math) and University of GA (Ed.Sp.).

John was a math teacher at Douglas County High and North Hall High. He was selected teacher of the year while at North Hall and Star Teacher four times. He also coached football, basketball, baseball, track, golf, and was Athletic Director and Assistant Principal while at the High School level. He became Principal at Brookton Elementary School, Wauka Mountain Elementary, Lula Elementary School and North Hall High School. He served as President of Region 8-AAA, District 9 Director of the Professional Association of GA educators, Director of the After School Program for Hall County Schools and represented Hall County Schools on the Hall Clean Council. He attended Trinity and First United Methodist Church. He served as Sunday school teacher, choir member and on many committees as well as an official board member. His faith in God was demonstrated by his commitment to his students and family throughout his career.

He married Joyce Ivey in 1994. Since retirement they enjoyed traveling and visiting family and friends. He enjoyed the fellowship and friends he met while living at the Gardens of Gainesville.

Mr. Corley was preceded in death by his parents, Hoyt and Edna Corley; his wife, Joyce Corley; brothers, Jimmy, Jackson, Mark and Paul and sister, Betty.

John is survived by sons and daughters in law, Brooks and Laura, Ben and Leigh, Brian and step daughter Stephanie and son in law, John Kinsey; grandchildren, Meredith, Brooke, Ethan, Bowen, Luke, Mark and Caroline who were the joy of his life as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

A Celebration of Life service will be held at 5:00 p.m. Thursday, February 29, 2024 at First United Methodist Church. Rev. Jamey Prickett will officiate. A reception will follow the Celebration of Life service where the family will receive friends at the church.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the C.O.M.E.T. Class of the First United Methodist Church.
