Sue Whitlow Swinson, age 84, passed away on Tuesday, January 23, 2024. She was preceded in death by her husband, William Edward Swinson, Jr.; parents, Etholene and Homer Whitlow; her brothers Berger Whitlow, Benjamin Whitlow, and Ramsey Whitlow; and her son, Andrew Benjamin Burgess. She is survived by her son, Robert (Bob) Burgess of Dacula, GA, and her stepchildren, William Edward “Ed” Swinson III of Huntsville, AL, Evelyn “Evie” Persinger of Cartersville, GA, and Susan Lewis of Cocoa Beach, FL; and twelve grandchildren, Michael Burgess, Molly Burgess, Ashley Terhane, William Edward Swinson IV, Rachael Bishop, Andrew Bishop, James Persinger, Katie Bishop, Thomas Bishop, Jenifer Steen, Brooke Ballance, and Shera Stansberry, and several great grandchildren. Mrs. Swinson was born on April 14, 1939, in Rocky Mount, Virginia. She was a graduate of Franklin County High School, the College of William and Mary (B.A., Latin), and Georgia State University (M.Ed., History and Latin). She retired from education after three decades of serving as a high school Latin, English, and History teacher. Mrs. Swinson sponsored the Junior Classical League for her students and actively served in the Georgia Classical Association, including as Editor of The Classicist. The Georgia Classical League twice selected her as the Latin Teacher of the Year (1986, 1992) for the state of Georgia. A Graveside Service will be held at 12:30 p.m., at Ga. National Cemetery, Canton, GA, on Wednesday, February 7, 2024
