Rev. Pastor Danny E. Smith

Rev. Pastor Danny E. Smith, age 79, of Buford, GA passed away on Thursday, January 25, 2024. He was preceded in death by his father, William Frank Smith and mother, Kathleen Johnson Wylie; step-mother, Lillie Mae Allen Ragsdale; his brother, Jerry Smith and his sister, Glenda Smith.

Rev. Smith is survived by his wife of thirty-eight years, Sherry Maddox Smith of Buford; sons and daughters-in-law, Scott and Ingrid Smith of Buford, Hugh and Rhonda Melton of Monroe, GA; daughters and son-in-law, Robin Smith of Bethlehem, GA, Lisa Nelson of Winder, GA, Dana Brogdon of Dahlonega, GA, Kristi and Jason Carey of Winder, GA; thirteen grandchildren, Brittany Malloch, Brianna Craft, Christopher Craft, Vanessa Foster, Naomi Nelson, Christian Sadler, Michael Foster, Cory Pruitt, B. J. Brogdon, Kord Carey, Nicole Melton, Timothy Melton, and Robert Melton; nine great grandchildren; sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, Margaret Smith of Flowery Branch, GA; Ricky and Sandra Parker of Hoschton, GA Patricia and Clint Dunaway of Buford, and Billy Maddox of Lawrenceville, GA; and cousins and a host of friends.

Mr. Smith was a 1963 graduate of Buford High School where he played football and was a member of the first track team at the school. He served in the U. S. Air Force during the Vietnam war, stateside at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio, Texas. He retired from the Gwinnett Police Department in 2003 after twenty-three years of service. Upon retirement from the department, he remained as a police chaplain. He was also a former deputy sheriff of the Gwinnett County Sheriff’s Department in the 1960’s, and he served as a police officer with the former City of Buford Police Department.

Mr. Smith was a member of Buford Church of God for thirty-four years where he served as Elder, Deacon, and Sunday School teacher. He and his wife were co-directors of Dove Prison Ministries for thirty-five years as well as the pastors of the Prime Timers Senior Ministry for fifteen years. Mr. Smith served for thirty-five years as the State Jail and Prison Ministries coordinator for the North Georgia Church of God and on the Church of God International Prison Commission, and four years at Oakwood Church of God.

Funeral Services will be held on Sunday, January 28, 2024 at 2:00 p.m. at the Buford Church of God with Pastor Joey Grizzle, Pastor Jeremy Cromwell, and Rev. Michael Mack officiating. Rev. Smith will Lie in State at the church from 1:00 p.m. until time for the service at 2:00 p.m.  Interment will follow at Duncan Creek Congregational Church Cemetery in Buford, GA. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Saturday, January 27 from 2:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m.
