Jon Walton Root, 84, went home to be with the Lord on Wednesday, January 17, 2024, surrounded by family at his home in Atlanta, Georgia.
Jon was born on February 19, 1939, in Jackson, Mississippi, the ninth child of Percy Gordon Root, Sr. and Claire Hamlett Root, who both preceded him in death. He was husband to Kaye Burnham Root, who preceded him in death on September 1, 2015, and father to Stacy Root Seaton, Joni Root Adams, and Lori Root Griffin. Jon graduated from Brandon High School where he played football and baseball and later attended Hinds Junior College.
High school sweethearts, Jon and Kaye graduated together from Brandon High School in 1957 and married a year later. Jon had a very successful career in the commercial egg production and processing industry. The companies produced eggs for grocery stores, restaurants, and other retail markets. His lengthy career included stops in Indiana, Florida, Arkansas, and Georgia.
In addition to a successful business career, Jon always put God, his wife, and his family first. They attended local churches where Jon would serve as a deacon and teach classes in evangelism. He was known as a true prayer warrior who displayed Christ in both word and deed. His life revolved around his family and neighbors who became as close as family.
Jon was preceded in death by his wife Kaye and daughter Stacy Root (Rick) Seaton of Jefferson City, Missouri, and is survived by sisters, Ruth Root Benton and Betty Root, both of Brandon, MS; daughters Joni Root (Forrest) Adams of Springdale, Arkansas, and Lori Root (Reg) Griffin of Atlanta, Georgia. He is also survived by seven grandchildren: Sarah (Roy) Jackson, Rachel (Randal) Timmerman, Ryan Collins, Hollis Griffin, Abby (Patrick) Coon, Emily (Jacob) Foster, Ashleigh Collins, and ten great-grandchildren.
