Evans Funeral Home of Jefferson announces the death of Mr. Roger G. Christman Sr., age 92, of Jefferson, Georgia who peacefully entered rest on Monday December 25, 2023.
Mr. Christman was born in Erie, Pennsylvania the son of the late Nathan Christman and Rachel Diehl Christman. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Elizabeth Beckett Christman.
Mr. Christman was a graduate of M.I.T. in 1951 with a B.S Chemical Engineering Degree. Additional degrees include an M.S. in Chemical Engineering in 1961 from University of Pittsburgh and an M.S. in Mathematics in 1963 from University of Pittsburgh. Mr. Christman retired as a chemical engineer after working for Shell Oil in Texas and Louisiana, Westinghouse in Pittsburgh, PA and Bethlehem Steel in Bethlehem, PA.
Mr. Christman was a veteran of the United States Air Force (Airman 1st Class) stationed at Wright Patterson Air Force Base, Ohio.
Mr. Christman was very active in Community Activities including the American Legion (53 years), the American Legion Band in Bethlehem, PA, and most recently was a member of Albert Gordon American Legion Post 56, Jefferson, GA. His musical involvement included playing trombone and baritone in the Bethlehem, PA Municipal Band, Central Moravian Church Trombone Choir in Bethlehem, PA and the Fort Yargo Community Band (15 years) in Winder, GA. During tax season, Mr. Christman volunteered as an AARP tax consultant for 25 years, assisting senior citizens with their tax returns.
Mr. Christman and his wife enjoyed dancing with the Saucon Squares Western Style Square Dance Club. Mr. Christman also participated in Bridge Clubs and enjoyed sailing with the Lake Lanier Sailing Club.
Mr. Christman was a man of faith, and a member of the First United Methodist Church, Jefferson where he sang in the choir, taught Sunday School, and assisted with Vacation Bible School.
Mr. Christman enjoyed helping young people learn, and was a full-time volunteer with Jefferson Academy, Jefferson City Schools (math & science) for more than 15 years. After school, he provided math homework support to students at the Boys & Girls Club of Jackson County in Jefferson. He had formerly volunteered with the Boys & Girls Club in Bethlehem, PA.
Mr. Christman is survived by his five children: Daniel Christman, Diana Haynie, Eileen Christman, Ellen Deremer, and Roger Christman, Jr. Mr. Christman is also survived by 15 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren.
Memorial services will be held 2:00 P.M. Saturday, January 13, 2024 at Evans Funeral Home Chapel. The family will receive friends from 12 noon until time of service at 2:00 P.M. at Evans Funeral Home.
