Charmet Osborn Garrett

Our dearly beloved Charmet Osborn Garrett, 98, died peacefully November 25, 2023 at her home in Buford, GA.  Charmet was born January 2, 1925, in Ellijay, GA., daughter of the late James “Jim” and Emma Simmons Osborn.  She grew up in Ellijay, together with her parents and her parents’ siblings, Charles Leslie “Les” Osborn and Bessie Simmons Osborn (brothers married sisters).  The home was a large farmhouse where her brother, James Osborn and 2 double first cousins, Virginia Osborn Mayes and Catherine Osborn Waters, also lived.

She attended Ga. State College for Women (currently Ga. State College & University) in Milledgeville, GA. where she earned a degree in Home Economics.  Upon graduation she moved to Smyrna, GA. to teach at Osborne High School.

In 1947 she married Charles Stephen Garrett, now deceased, from Summerville, GA.  They were married at the Osborn homeplace.  Their marriage and deep love for each other lasted 65 years during which they raised their 2 sons, Michael Stephen Garrett and Mark Osborn Garrett.

Charmet was a home maker, a substitute teacher for the Buford City School System and a volunteer worker.  Charmet was a long-time member of Buford First United Methodist Church where she served as Sunday School Superintendent, coordinating all the teachers and their lessons for many years. She was also an active member of the United Methodist Women where she provided support to the women of the church and was a source of knowledge and history of the church.  She was named the Buford First United Methodist Women’s Matriarch of the year in 2014.

Charmet is survived by her 2 sons and their wives Mike and Vicki Garrett, Buford, GA and Mark and Mindy Garrett, Marietta, GA., grandchildren Ansley Garrett, Buford, GA., Wesley Garrett and his wife Shelley, Cumming, GA., Ben Garrett and his wife Candra Michelle, Marietta, GA., Anna Garrett Fowler and her husband Zach, Sandy Springs, GA., great grandchildren Stephen, Savannah, Shylan Garrett, Easton Lago and Caleb Cash, Cumming, GA. She is also survived by her nieces Yvette Osborn, Ellijay, GA., Cindy Brockington, Acworth, GA, Cathie (Hugh) Hudson, Atlanta, GA., Mary Mayes (Tom Jordon), Athens, GA., nephew Larry Blocker, Starkville, MS., niece Anna Marie Rasberry (Freddie), Starkville, MS., nephew Adrian Blocker (Karen) Savannah, GA., nephew Dan Worley (Jeri), Ellijay, GA., niece Mary Ellen Osborn, Fayetteville, GA. and grandnephews Charles (Katherine) Jordan, Athens, OH., their children, great grandnephew, James and great grandniece Anna Grace, Ben Jordon, Athens, OH, and grandniece Erin Johnson (Chris), and their daughter, great grandniece Ada, Ellijay, GA.

Funeral service will be held Tuesday, November 28, 2023, at 2:00 PM at Buford First United Methodist Church. Pastor Jim Buckman will officiate. Interment will follow at Broadlawn Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends Tuesday, November 28, 2023, from 1:00 – 2:00 PM at the church.
