Johnny M. Ashburn

Obituary Date: Friday, November 10, 2023

Dr. Johnny M. Ashburn, 77, of Dawsonville passed away Friday, November 10, 2023 following a period of declining health.

Born December 12, 1945 to the late Corbet and Kathleen Ashburn, Dr. Ashburn had been a resident of Dawsonville for almost 20 years.  He and his family spent 25 years in Woodstock, Illinois where he served as the pastor of Woodstock Assembly of God and chaplain at the McHenry County Sheriff’s Office.  Dr. Ashburn also served as a missionary in India and was currently a member of Concord Baptist Church in Cumming, Georgia.  A U.S. Navy Veteran, he served in Vietnam as a Seabee and was also a Lt. Colonel of the Georgia Defense Force where he served as chaplain.  In his personal time, he thoroughly enjoyed listening to and playing bluegrass music.

Surviving are his wife of 53 years, Nancy Jo Ashburn of Dawsonville; sons, Daniel Ashburn (Tammi) of Cumming, J. Mark Ashburn (Cheryl) of Poplar Grove, IL; daughters, Rebekah Brinner (Stirling) of Wayne, NJ, Beverly White (Tom) of Belvidere, IL; brother, Ronnie Ashburn (Carlene) of New Smyrna Beach, FL; sister, Connie Spurgeon of Holly Springs, NC; grandchildren, Courtney, Josh, Bailey, Ireland, Red, Zoë, Tabitha, and Konrad; great-granddaughter, Muna; other relatives.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, November 15, 2023 at 3 p.m. at Concord Baptist Church.  Dr. Scott Gilbert will officiate.  Interment will follow in the church cemetery.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Wednesday, November 15, 2023 from 10:30 a.m. until 2:30 p.m.
