Rachel was born on October 31, 1934 to the late R.H. “Hubert” and Florence Carter McEver.

She graduated from Brenau and began her teaching career in 1960 at Sardis Elementary School. She taught there for 1 year and then moved to Brookton Elementary to teach 4th grade. She taught there until Wauka Mountain School opened and replaced Brookton. She retired from teaching at the end of the 1994-95 school year. She also helped in after school program after she retired from teaching full time. In addition to teaching, she served as chair / co-chair of the Annual Chicken Pie Supper every year. She touched many lives for the 34 + years she taught.

She became a faithful member of Dewberry Baptist Church #1 in 1959. She filled many roles as a member, she taught Sunday school, played piano as needed and was hostess for a while. One of the favorite things her church family loved was all the fried okra they would fix on meal functions.

She and Rex hosted many fish fry’s every summer and their yard was full of friends and neighbors. It was a time of celebrating summer and friendships. You never felt anything but welcome at their home.
