Dorothy Dean Zuck of Gainesville, Georgia, formally of Moultrie, began life’s journey on February 3, 1923 to the delight of her parents, Dr. and Mrs. Clay L. Dean. Her Journey continued until September 26, 2023, after a brief illness. She was surrounded by her family and caregivers as her life’s journey ended. She had celebrated, in February 2023, her hundredth birthday where she was feted with a family gathering including a 1940’s Coca-Cola party, a parade and a play presented by her great-grandchildren.
She is well remembered by her two daughters and husbands Patricia Durham (Buzz) and Elizabeth Wisehart (Steve), five grandchildren and their spouses, Anna Lee and Andrew Mutter, Laura and Jed Roebuck, Turner and Wesleigh Wisehart, Jon Durham and Jessica Tupper, and Holly and Jeff Durham-Guckian, thirteen great-grandchildren; Phoebe, Wisehart and John Mitchell Mutter; Oak, Roan and Hawk Roebuck; Bear, Ford and Wynne Wisehart; Ashlon and Jonah Durham; Seda and Aiken Durham-Guckian. Dorothy was predeceased by her husband John A. Zuck, her brothers, Joe and Clay Dean and many of her cherished friends.
Dorothy met John Zuck, an Army-Air Corp Pilot, during her college years at Brenau College where she graduated in 1944. Following graduation, she married John, who soon completed military service in Tennessee. Dorothy and John enjoyed 66 years of marriage primarily in Moultrie, Georgia.
Dorothy extended hospitality, graciousness and kindness to all she met. She was passionate about supporting her family and their pursuits, the Arts Council, the Methodist Church, the Nature Conservancy, women’s organizations, sailing with our Dad, gardening, and artistic endeavors. Her quiet faith sustained her in the war years, as well as during happy and sad family times.
She had a keen wit, playful spirit and surprised us often with her memory abilities, almost to the end. She had fun using words, like chinoiserie, etagere, as well as, long remembered rhymes. Dorothy loved animals, especially her cats; she was a rescuer of turtles, squirrels, and birds. Dad once said he that he wanted to come back as one of Dorothy’s cats! Her artistic talents bloomed in her later years as she created gift cards, whimsical drawings and sketches. She always had paints, pencils, pens, and paper close by her side and enjoyed sharing them with her dear companions, Kayelynn and Joyce.
Fare thee well, dear Mama. You loved well and were well loved by a “plethora” of people and animals, including your niece and nephew, Fay and Clay and their families, sister-in-law, Sara, Nadeene, Joyce and other special relatives and friends.
