LTC Gilmer L. Vandiver, age 94, of Cleveland, passed away on Thursday, September 14, 2023.
Mr. Vandiver was born on June 19, 1929, in Helen, Georgia, to the late Lawrence and Jewell Jones Vandiver. In addition to his parents, Gilmer was preceded in death by his brother, Lamar Vandiver.
Gilmer was a retired Lieutenant Colonel for the United States Army, serving in World War II, the Korean War, and the Vietnam War. Mr. Vandiver was a highly decorated Army officer and some of his numerous awards include the Legion of Merit, Air Medal (4 oak leaf cluster), World War II Victory Medal, Korean Service Medal (3 bronze stars), Vietnam Service Medal (2 bronze stars), Army Aviator Senior Badge and the Combat Infantryman Badge. Gilmer was very proud of his country and his family. He was a member of Roy Head Post 16 American Legion for over 50 years and will be remembered as an honest and patriotic man.
Survivors include his wife of 56 years, Brenda Vandiver; daughter, Carol Patterson (Douglas); son, Robert Vandiver (Heather); grandchildren, Paige Patterson, Sam Patterson, Callie Patterson, and Annalee Vandiver.
A memorial service will be held at 4:00 P.M. Saturday, September 16, 2023, at The Chapel of Barrett Funeral Home. The Rev. Dave Fortner and Mr. Bill House will officiate. Inurnment will follow at Yonah View Memorial Gardens.
The family will receive friends from 3:00 – 4:00 P.M. Saturday, at the funeral home, prior to the memorial service.
