Sherma Hughes Dunagan, daughter of the late William R. and Mildred N. Hughes was born June 20,1948 in Gainesville, Ga. and died September 3,2023 in Gainesville, Ga.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her beloved son John Dunagan, husband Randy Dunagan, brother John Hughes, sister Millie Hughes, and brother Russ Hughes.
She is survived by daughter Kristina Dunagan; brother Jim Henderson; nieces Krista Hughes and Millie Henderson Love; grandchildren Alexandria King, Austin Reisinger, Anamarie Westbrook, Alia Benjamin, Caitlin Dunagan, and Brayden Dunagan and Victoria Henry, great-grandchildren, Colton and Lilyana Meeks; an extended family of cousins, nieces, and nephews; and countless others whom she loved like they were her own.
Sherma was a graduate of Gainesville High School. She lived many years in Fort Walton Beach, Florida, where she raised her two children, welcomed many others into her home, and became a Florida Gators fan, but only if they weren’t playing the Georgia Bulldogs. After returning to Gainesville, she worked as a district manager for Waffle House. She later joined Home Depot as a kitchen designer and worked there until her retirement.
Sherma's true calling was caring for others. Jesus commanded us to love one another, and Sherma took this commandment to heart. She spent a lifetime making sure others felt loved, especially those who needed it most. She often opened up her home to those who had nowhere else to go. Her home, much like her own mother’s, always had an extra teenager or two living there, and friends were an extended part of her family. While her circle of love was wide, her grandchildren and great-grandchildren were her truest delight. They, along with those who were blessed to be loved by Sherma, carry the spirit of her love into the world wherever they go.
Please join the family of Sherma Hughes Dunagan for a Memorial & Service on Sunday, September 17, 2023, at Little and Davenport in Gainesville Georgia from 2-4pm.
