James S. Mitchell

Evans Funeral Home of Jefferson announces the death of Mr. James S. Mitchell, age 77, of Commerce, Georgia who entered rest Tuesday, June 27, 2023. Mr. Mitchell was born in Wilson, North Carolina the son of the late James H. and Lugenia Holland Mitchell. Mr. Mitchell was baptized in 1955 at the Piney Grove Freewill Baptist Church in North Carolina.

Mr. Mitchell retired from the United States Air Force in 1986 with the rank of Staff Sergeant,  where he was an Airborne Warning and Control Radar Technician. After retirement he worked with Lockheed Martin. He also worked as a front-end cash clerk at the Loring AFB Commissary. His last job was with the Gulfport Mississippi School System Maintenance Department. Mr. Mitchell loved to hunt, fish and especially loved being around his Family.  He belonged to different clubs throughout the years to include CB & Snowmobile clubs. As a military family they had visited all fifty states as well as Europe and Japan.

Survivors include his wife of fifty-seven years, Helen Kathleen Mitchell of Commerce, GA., daughter, Sheryl A. Campbell (Walker) of Commerce, GA. son, James J. Mitchell (Johana) of Stafford, VA..  Seven grandchildren, Tiffany Hendrix (Brent) of Woodstock, GA, Robert Campbell (Erin) of Asheboro, NC, Cameron Campbell of Commerce, GA, Katherine Campbell of Atlanta, GA, Tyler J. Caron of Caribou, ME, Madison A. Mitchell and Mikayla G. Mitchell both of Dumfries, VA..  Three great grandchildren, Presley Hendrix, Parker Hendrix and Canaan Campbell. Two sisters, Jean Haase (Ron) of Minnesota and Edith Mobley (Glen) LaGrange, N.C., several nieces, nephews and other relatives also survive.

Memorial services will be held 3:00 P.M. Saturday, July 15, 2023 from the Faith Baptist Church in Jefferson with Reverend Stephen Burrell officiating.  The family will receive friends at the Church 2:00 – 3:00 P.M. prior to the service.
