Mr. Hayden Leroy Stancil, age 87, of Dahlonega, passed away Friday, June 23, 2023. He was born in Lumpkin County on March 22, 1936, to the late Emory and Mattie Belle Edmondson Stancil.
Hayden was the best husband he could be to his wife of 67 years, Jean. He was a kind, smart, and patient man. Hayden was lovingly known as “Pop”. He loved his family with everything he had. He taught them, by example, many life lessons, including to look for the good in everyone, to help others when you can, to love animals, and to leave things better than you found them. He also wanted them to remember that your wealth comes from your family, from times spent holding a grandchild to keeping the memories alive of the ones that have gone on before you. Hayden was blessed to see all his eleven grandchildren grow up and most of his sixteen great-grandchildren running around. Family gatherings were filled with hugs, stories, laughter, banana pudding, and, most importantly, love. He will forever be missed.
Hayden enjoyed fixing things, he could take anything apart and put it back together again, and it always worked better than it began. One quote by John Paul that would describe him best would be, “He was the sharpest tool in the shed. A true Swiss Army knife of craftsmanship and knowledge”. He was an avid Atlanta Braves fan and a member of Friendship Baptist Church.
In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his daughter Lori Stancil Ramsey.
Survivors include his beloved wife, Jean Brown Stancil; sons and daughters-in-law Rick and Katie Stancil of Hiawassee, GA, and Mark and Teresa Stancil of Cumming, GA; daughter and son-in-law Tracy and Charles Porter of Blytheville, SC; sister Ruth Rudder of Gastonia, NC; eleven grandchildren and sixteen great-grandchildren.
Funeral services are scheduled for 2:00 PM on Tuesday, June 27, 2023, at the chapel of Anderson-Underwood Funeral Home. The Rev. Lyman Caldwell and Bishop Kevin Carlisle will officiate. Interment will follow in Dahlonega Memorial Park Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Monday, June 26, 2023, from 6:00 PM - 8:00 PM.
