James Vernon Grier

Obituary Date: Sunday, June 18, 2023

James Vernon Grier, 90 of Gainesville died Sunday June 18, 2023, at his residence. James was born on November 25, 1932, to the late James A. and Mattie Marchbanks Grier.

He was a lifelong resident of Hall County and became a contributing member of Timber Ridge Baptist Church in the summer of 1975 after being baptized in Chandler Creek by Re. Ruel Martin, along with 23 others that day.  He loved his Church, riding in the mountains and eating at Granny's in Cherokee, N.C.  Mr. Grier attended Airline School in Hall County, prior to serving in the military during the Korean War, he was stationed in South Korea as an Army Cook.  

After his tour of duty, he came home to his family in Gainesville, and established Vernon Grier Shavings which became a well-known business serving chicken farmers throughout North Georgia and parts of South Carolina, North Carolina and Tennessee. 

In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his first wife Elise Grier, his son Stanley Grier, his daughter Cheryl Grier, sisters, Bernice Grier, Myrlon Poole and Thursie Poole and niece, Joyce Poole. 

He leaves behind his wife of 48 years, Sylvia Marette Grier, sons, Gregory and Gary Grier, stepchildren Teresa Cagle, Gail Baugh, Denise Littlefield and Jimmy Hightower, grandchildren, Dexter Grier, Justin Wilson, Natalie Grier, Eric Baugh, Josh Littlefield, Ashleigh Baugh, Jessie Baugh, Nichole Key, Alan Grier, Esley Grier, Kayla Grier, Alex Hightower, Abbey Hightower, Nicholas Hightower, Wyatt Grier, Madison Grier and Brooklyn Richardson, great-grandchildren, Emma Flores, Taeyang Baugh, Cutler Grier, Kyleigh Grier, Jentzen Baugh, Lily Grier and Ella Grier.

Visitation will be Tuesday June 20, 2023, from 4-8 p.m. at Little & Davenport Funeral Home and again from 10-11 a.m. at Timber Ridge Baptist Church with the Funeral to follow at 11:00a.m. at Timber Ridge, Rev. Kody Rylee, Rev. Alvin Burns, Rev. Chris York and Rev. Wesley Purcell officiating, with interment to follow in the Church Cemetery.
