Calvin Varnum

Obituary Date: Sunday, May 21, 2023

Mr. Calvin Varnum was born June 8, 1951 in Commerce, Georgia to the late G.W. and Mary Lizzie Rivers Varnum. He departed this life on May 21, 2023. Calvin was educated at J.L. Williams and Bryan High School. However, at the age of 16, Calvin’s life was changed with the death of his mother. Calvin’s big heart and unselfish love decided to leave school and start working at Harmony Mill Grove in Commerce in order to raise his younger brother Marshall who was only 11 years old at that time. As Calvin got older you could always see him walking in the Commerce community. He always said he loved to walk for exercise and to keep his blood pressure good. Rain or shine, you could find Calvin at Huck’s, or at Hardees, or even at the CVS getting his blood pressure checked. Calvin loved Commerce and always smiled and waved to people passing through town. Calvin was preceded in death by his mother and father Mary Lizzie and G.W. Varnum; his brothers Charles, Pete and Washington; his sisters Sarah Nell, JoAnne, Margaret and Mary Frances. He leaves to cherish his memory: daughter, Margaretia Henderson, Commerce, Georgia; brother, Marshall (Cherie) Varnum, Jefferson, Georgia; half brother and half sisters, Keith, Stephanie, Sherry, Jan; two grandchildren, four great-grandchildren, a host of nieces, nephews, and relatives.
