Elizabeth Jane Hutchins Ewing, age 86, went to her heavenly home on May 16, 2023. Jane was born on June 17, 1936 in Gainesville, Georgia and grew up there and in Warner Robbins, Georgia. She was a 1954 graduate of Gainesville High School, and often reflected that she really did grow up in the “Happy Days” of the 1950’s. She then studied chemistry at Brenau University, graduating (Magna Cum Laude) with a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1958.
While working in a chemistry lab after college, Jane was introduced to the love of her life by her Aunt Ozie Hutchins in Atlanta. She and John William Ewing, Jr. married in 1959 and enjoyed a loving life until John’s passing in 2021. Theirs was a wonderful marriage and an inspiration to many. They enjoyed traveling to visit family and on many adventures.
Most of their married life was in Dallas, Texas, where they were longtime members of the Park Cities Baptist Church. They taught first grade Sunday School together and were active in the Howard Sunday School Class. Jane also worked in the administrative offices of the church. Jane very much enjoyed the music ministry at Park Cities. In their later years she sang with John in the Notables senior choir. Through the years Jane also enjoyed the Spring Creek Garden Club. Her most cherished role was being “Grammy” to her grandchildren.
Jane passed away peacefully with family in Falls Church, Virginia, and is survived by children Mark Ewing (Carla) and Carol Ewing Elliott (Todd); grandchildren Claire and Myla Ewing and Clark (Kirsten), Blake, and Julia Elliott, as well as great granddaughter June Elizabeth Elliott. She was preceded in death by her husband John and by her parents, Paul C. Hutchins and Emma Lee (Smith) Hutchins, her brother Paul C. Hutchins, Jr., and infant grandson Lance William Ewing.
A graveside service will be held 11:00 am Monday, May 22, 2023 at Alta Vista Cemetery in Gainesville, Georgia. If desired, memorials may be made to the Dallas Arboretum or the Park Cities Baptist Church General Fund.
