Mildred Sylvania Diem Yancey

Mildred Sylvania Diem Yancey died peacefully at home on May 13, 2023, a week after celebrating her 99th birthday. She was born and spent her early years in Philadelphia, and moved to Atlanta after marrying Marshall Yancey, a sailor in the U.S. Navy. Tragically, he died from polio at the age of 23, leaving her as a widow with two sons under the age of 3.

Mrs. Yancey studied at the Philadelphia Bible Institute, and completed her undergraduate and graduate degrees at Immanuel Bible College and Theological Seminary in Atlanta, a school that also granted her an honorary doctorate degree. Beginning in 1956, she served as a missionary with Bible Club Movement, now known as Bible Centered Ministries, teaching the Bible in homes, churches, camps, and schools.

Mrs. Yancey is survived by her sister, Ruth Lott, several nieces, and nephews, and by her sons Marshall Yancey Jr., in California, and the author Philip Yancey who lives in Colorado. For the past 15 years Mrs. Yancey lived with the Mark Johnson family of Cleveland, Georgia.

Graveside services are scheduled for 11 A.M. Monday, May 15, 2023 at Blue Creek Baptist Church Cemetery.  Rev. Dennis Turner will officiate.
