Evelyn Brogdon Simmons

Obituary Date: Wednesday, April 12, 2023

Evelyn Brogdon Simmons, 94, of Loganville, GA, transitioned peacefully on April 12, 2023, from age related illness.

Evelyn was born on July 3, 1928, to Bonnie and Winnie Maddox Brogdon in Lawrenceville, GA.  She graduated from Sugar Hill High School in 1946.  She married Willie “Herman” Simmons in 1948 and in 1954 they became early residents of the historic Northwoods Neighborhood in Doraville where they raised their three children, Debra, David and Donald.  They were charter members of Northwoods Methodist Church.

Evelyn was a devoted daughter, sister, wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, aunt, cousin, and friend who loved her family above all else. She was the keeper of the family history and photos. She and Herman traveled all over the southeast visiting courthouses compiling ancestry records and meeting distant relatives.  As long as she was able, she attended every family reunion and always acknowledged everyone’s birthdays with either a phone call or a card.

“Mama”, as she was known to her grand- and great-grandchildren, never missed concerts, ball games, graduations or other special events for her children, grandchildren or great-grandchildren. She even took her first and only flight to great-grandson, Joey’s graduation from US Coast Guard basic training at the age of 88, even though she was terrified to fly.

Evelyn was a wizard at all types of puzzles. She loved jigsaw puzzles, crosswords, sudoku and anything she could take apart and put back together. Before arthritis took over her hands, she also loved crafts including sewing and knitting.  Evelyn was an avid fan of the Atlanta Braves, especially Hank Aaron and Dale Murphy.  She would even record the ball games in case she happened to miss one.

Evelyn was predeceased by her husband of 49 years, Herman Simmons; parents, Bonnie and Winnie Brogdon; and sister, Elinor LeFevre. She is survived by her children, Debra (RP) Brown of Snellville, David (Donna) Simmons of Braselton, and Donald Simmons of Loganville; grandchildren, Dawn (Larry, Jr) Amaker, Scott (Jennifer) Brown, Eric (Angie) Brown, Matthew (Amber) Simmons and Zachary (Bailey) Simmons; great-grandchildren, Joseph Brown, Johnathan Brown and Larry Amaker, III; her sister, Lauris Gober of Marietta; and many, many cousins, nieces and nephews.

Services will be held at Flanigan Funeral Home and Crematory in Buford, GA on Sunday, April 16, 2023 at 2:00 pm. Visitation will be from 11:00 am until the time of the service.  Interment will take place at Walnut Fork Baptist Church, Hoschton, GA immediately following the service.
