James (Jimmy) Luther Martin, 78, of Gainesville, Georgia passed away on April 7, 2023 after an extended illness.
A lifelong resident of Gainesville, Jimmy deeply loved his family, friends, church, and community. Jimmy was preceded in death by his parents, Mary and Jake Martin, his mother-in-law and father-in-law Frances and Harold Zellner, as well as his brother, Billy Martin.
He is survived by his devoted wife of 51 years, Lynn Martin and their children: Daphne Mohon of Birmingham, Alabama and Brian (Melissa) Martin of Madison; sisters-in-law Barbara Martin of Cumming and Betsy (Dan) McCann of Bonaire and five grandsons: Kyle and Andrew Mohon and James, Charlie and Thomas Martin. Jimmy also leaves behind beloved cousins, nieces and nephews.
As his health declined, Jimmy received attentive care from the loving staff at The Resting Nest in Gainesville, who became part of the family. Jimmy graduated from Gainesville High School in 1962. Following in the family tradition, he attended Georgia Institute of Technology and graduated with a degree in Industrial Management. After graduation, Jimmy dedicated his career to stewarding the family business, Jake Martin and Son Contractors, Inc, an erosion control and commercial grassing company.
He will be remembered as a man of deep faith in Jesus. A charter member of Lakewood Baptist Church, Jimmy was involved in many different ministries in the life of the church. He was a Life Deacon and a longtime member of the Adam and Eve Sunday School Class. Jimmy never missed an opportunity to volunteer: serving as a greeter, leadinat VBS, and teaching in Lakewood’s Kids Cove for many years.
The Martin family will receive friends at a visitation on Monday, April 10, 2023 from 10 am to 12 pm at Lakewood Baptist Church. A memorial service will be held immediately following visitation at 12 pm. A private burial will take place at a later time.
