Judith Marie Filter

Obituary Date: Tuesday, March 21, 2023
Judith Marie Filter went home to be with the Lord surrounded by loved ones on March 21, 2023, in Hoschton, Georgia. Judy was born on October 27, 1942 in Toledo, Ohio to Ruth McNett Ost and George Richard Ost. At the young age of 15, she met the love of her life, Maynard Dean Filter (Butch) on a beautiful summer day at Devils Lake in Michigan. After dating for 5 years, they were married in Toledo on August 3, 1963. On August 16th of 1967 they welcomed their son Keith Eric Filter and on February 13th of 1970 they completed their family with their daughter Kellie Lyn Sciortino. Together they lived in Ohio, Michigan, Virginia, Alabama, and Georgia, and several months of the year as snowbirds in sunny Arizona.

Above all else, faith and family were most valued by Judy. She was raised Catholic and graduated from St. Ursula Academy. Judy completed business school in Toledo and worked in various positions in the private sector, the Catholic Church and academe. She retired as a fiscal technician from James Madison University. She cherished her time with her kids, their spouses, and her grandchildren. She was affectionately known as Mimi. Many hours were spent throughout the years watching dance competitions, plays, and sports. Mimi was everyone’s biggest cheerleader.

Judy and Butch enjoyed entertaining, hosting many parties and social gatherings for friends, colleagues, and family over the years. In their retirement years, they especially liked to host wine tasting, Mah Jongg, bridge, and game nights in their community of Deaton Creek. Judy was a member of the Philanthropic Educational Organization (PEO), a sorority supporting the education of women. Everyone is going to miss Judy’s sincere friendship, quick wit, and infectious laugh. Her energy could light up a room.

Judy and Butch enjoyed traveling throughout their lives together. From old-fashioned road trips in America to far-flung adventures in foreign lands, their travels took them all around the U.S. and the world including some favorite trips to England, Spain, France, Italy, Greece, and Germany. Leading a group of James Madison University students in a study abroad program in the Fall of 1997 in London, England was a highlight. Throughout their lives, they especially loved spending time with family at the beach.

Judy is survived by her loving husband Butch, her son Keith (Karen) Filter, her daughter Kellie (Ned) Sciortino, and her grandchildren Maxwell Filter, Marlee Filter, Nicolette Sciortino, and Gianna Sciortino.

All of those she loved and touched deeply. A Celebration of Life will be held at 11:00 a.m. on May 5th in the Clubhouse at Deaton Creek. A Mass will be held in Judith’s name at 9:00 a.m. at Prince of Peace Catholic Church on May 6th.
