James Emery Gober

Obituary Date: Monday, March 20, 2023

Mr. James Emery Gober, age 97, of Buford, GA. passed away on March 20, 2023.  He was preceded in death by his loving wife of seventy-two years, Elizabeth Mathis Gober; his parents, Everett and Ora Gober; sister, Ruby Ellsworth; brothers, Cecil Gober and William Gober; brother-in-law, George Mathis; grandsons, Scott Bradford and Mikey Humphrey. Mr. Gober is survived by his daughters and sons-in-law, Jan and Keith Humphrey of Dawsonville, GA., Jill and Jerome Bradford of Auburn, GA.; grandchildren, Kalyn (Jett) Bowen of Braselton, GA., Jason (Shirley) Bradford of Buford, GA., Britni (Jason) Abercrombie of Copperhill, Tn., Brett Humphrey of Blue Ridge, GA.; Five great-grandchildren; sister-in-law, Runette Mathis; cousins, Jane Wheeler and Christine Roach Rifineti; several nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, and special great-niece, Jessie Mathis.  Mr. Gober was born February 15, 1926 in Buford, GA.  He joined the Navy at age 17.  He served in the Navy from 2/8/1944 to 5/7/1946 on the U.S.S. ROI CVE103 ship and was stationed at New Smyrna Beach, Florida.  Jim graduated from Buford High School in 1952 after the service.  Jim was employed with General Motors at the Doraville Plant where he worked for 40 years as a Paint Coordinator, a job he enjoyed greatly and he was able to travel for his job.  He also enjoyed traveling with his work associate and friend, Carol Kemper.  Jim was instrumental in helping young people get employment with the company that he was proud to be employed by.  Jim was president of the Lion’s Club in 1960 and also a Charter Member.  He was Senior Vice President of the American Legion.  He was honored to be on the Buford School Board from 1961 through 1962.  Jim was an avid sports fan, loved the Wolves, the Braves and especially the University of Georgia Bulldogs.  He went to Athens every opportunity he could and went to many bowl games, including the 1980 National Championship.  If he was not at the games, he was watching on TV and calling his girls when something good happened.  He passed on his love for Georgia football to his girls.  Jim was a member of the First Baptist Church of Buford for over 75 years.  Jim enjoyed traveling, going to Daytona Beach and spending time with family.  The family would like to thank all of the caregivers that took care of Jim, especially “his girls” Kelly, Morgan, Star, Ce Ce, and Naesha. A Funeral Service will be held on Saturday, March 25, 2023, at 2:00 p.m. at the Chapel of Flanigan Funeral Home with Pastor Stephen Fountain officiating.  Interment will be at Broadlawn Memorial Gardens Mausoleum with Military Honors.  Visitation will be Saturday, March 25, 2023 from 12:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. at Flanigan Funeral Home.  Donations may be made to Eagle Ranch or First Baptist Church of Buford in memory of James E. Gober.
