John A. Schaefer

Obituary Date: Friday, March 10, 2023

John A. Schaefer was a true champion with a servant’s heart. John passed away in his home on March 9, 2023. It is with great honor to know the presence of the Lord welcomed him home after a 5 year battle with cancer.
John was born in 1970 on February 12 on Long Island, New York to Ellen and Robert Schaefer. After graduating from Oglethorpe University, John went on to marry his best friend, Lori. Shortly after they wed, they moved to Gwinnett County where John worked for Met Life, RTM Arby’s and eventually became a teacher. John accepted all kinds of jobs while teaching elementary school:  he taught Driver’s Education, and was the varsity boys’ and girls’ head soccer coach at Lanier High School for a number of years. However, with all the many hats this incredible man wore, he considered his primary role in life to be that of a devoted husband and father to his beautiful children, Rebecca Anne and Jacob Robinson.  He tirelessly volunteered as booster club president for their cross country and football programs, and he coached their soccer and swimming teams. This he did with utmost humility, tenacity, and grace throughout his illness. It is by these virtues that all who knew him, can say he was one of the most courageous and selfless people on earth!
John is survived by his devoted wife of 29 years, Lori; his two incredible children, Becca and Jacob; his caring and supportive sister, Beth (David) Sharp; his cherished aunt, Jacki Harris; many wonderful in-laws; countless extended family members and lifelong friends.
A Memorial Service will be held on Sunday, March 12, 2023 at 4:00 p.m. in the Chapel of Flanigan Funeral Home with Pastors Paul Nieman and Chris Morgan officiating. The family will receive friends from 2:30 p.m. until time for the service at 4:00 p.m. on Sunday, March 12.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks donations be made to American Cancer Society (https://www.cancer.org/involved/donate.html) or St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital (https://www.stjude.org/give.html).
