Ophelia (Pheebe) Sapp Liebtag

Obituary Date: Wednesday, February 15, 2023

Ophelia (Pheebe) Sapp Liebtag passed on to her eternal home on Feb 15, 2023, surrounded by her family, after living and loving on this earth for 96 years.

She leaves family members behind who will miss her very much: daughters, Lisa J. Hester (and husband Rick) and Robin L. Nix (and husband Mark), and grandchildren: Joy M. Gary (and husband Frank), Laura L. Richter (and husband Alex), A. Blake Westbrook and Grant B. Westbrook.  She also dearly loved her great grandchildren, Madeline and Frank Gary and Anneliese Richter. Ophelia outlived her husband, Earl F. Liebtag Jr by almost 50 years and never re-married, saying she had daughters (and later grandchildren and great grandchildren) to raise and love. Ophelia, one of five siblings, leaves behind only one sister, Lottie Heiermann, and many nieces and nephews.

Ophelia spent most of her life serving children in various ways: first raising her own, then helping with her grandchildren. She loved and supported her family well over the years, especially during extended visits when she cooked wonderful meals, loved on the children and helped the mamas with everything!  In addition to caring for family, she taught in the 2-3 year old Sunday School class at First Baptist Church, Jacksonville, Fl and worked for decades as a Bookkeeper at the neighborhood Elementary School in Jacksonville, Fl.

Sweet family memories of Ophelia include morning “quiet times” with her Bible, very enthusiastic cheering at swim meets and basketball games, celebrating joint birthdays with her eldest granddaughter, her excitement while witnessing her granddaughter’s wedding engagement, her joy to be a part of her grandson’s lives while living in North Carolina, peeling peaches and snapping green beans at the table, cooking good southern food and making fabulous desserts.  Her family won’t forget her piano hymn serenades, the beautiful quilts she made for each daughter and grandchild, marathon Saturday shopping trips, her baking and sewing tips, her definite fashion sense (perfect hair and always – matching shoes), and her purse over her arm when she was ready to go…. We will miss her on this side of Heaven, and so look forward to seeing her again!

Mrs. Leidtag's cremains will be carried back to Jacksonville, Florida for burial next to her husband, Earl Fred Liebtag.
