Wayne Whitmire

Obituary Date: Thursday, February 9, 2023

Wayne Whitmire, 83, of Gainesville, passed away Thursday, February 9, 2023. Wayne was born on October 23, 1939 in Shannon, Georgia; and was the son of the late Ralph C. Whitmire and Estelle Hulsey Whitmire. He attended Lyman Hall School and was a faithful member of Pleasant Hill Baptist Church and the Joy Sunday School Class. 

In addition to his parents, Wayne was preceded in death by Janette Whitmire, his loving wife of 55 years; and his brother Jimmy Whitmire. He was also preceded in death by his special uncle, James Hulsey, who was like a father to him.

Wayne is survived by his devoted daughter, Cindy D. Whitmire of Gainesville; sisters Gloria Whitmire of Gainesville and Jeanette Kesler of Oakwood; and brother-in-law and sister-in-law Doug and Linda Wayne of Tiger. Wayne is also survived by a host of nieces, nephews, and other extended family members, as well as his faithful and loving dogs, Buddy and Aspen.

After high school Wayne worked at Hulsey Brothers Wrecker Service. Later, he worked as a parts technician at several car dealerships in north Georgia. He was also employed with Hall Tire Company for 25 years. In 1989, Wayne founded Oakwood Tire, Inc., where he worked until his retirement in 2008. Wayne was a member of the Yaarab Temple, Lanier Shrine Club, and Gainesville Lodge No. 219. He was also a member of Corvair Atlanta and Old Friends Car Club of Gainesville.

Wayne was an avid collector of antique cars, with a special interest in Corvairs. Most of all, Wayne loved his Lord Jesus and was devoted to his family. He had a kind, gentle spirit, and was a dear friend to many. Wayne will be greatly missed.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, February 15, 2023 at Pleasant Hill Baptist Church. The Rev. Mike Taylor and Rev. Chuck Nations will officiate. Interment will follow in Memorial Park Cemetery. The family will receive friends at Memorial Park Funeral Home on Tuesday, February 14th from 2:00 p.m. until 4:00 p.m. and from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m.
