Mr. Kent Edward Kammermeyer, age 73, of Clermont passed away on Friday, January 13, 2023.
Mr. Kammermeyer was born in Winsted, CT on September 4, 1949, to the late Charles and Vanda Duda Kammermeyer. As a boy, Kent developed a deep love for hunting and fishing, a love that would eventually lead to a successful career with The Georgia Department of Natural Resources. His education began at St. Anthony’s Elementary, then to Gilbert High School in Connecticut. Kent went to pursue his undergraduate at the University of Connecticut. Then he received his graduate degree at The University of Georgia. Kent was an avid University of Georgia Bulldog and Atlanta Braves fan.
Kent was an accomplished writer and photographer, and you might have read some of his articles in Georgia Outdoor News and The Gainesville Times. Kent served and chaired on several committees and organizations for service to wildlife and the outdoors. He was also instrumental in the restoration of deer, turkey, and Canadian geese in northeast Georgia by developing computer models, surveys, and seed mixtures. Bears to birds also benefited.
Kent founded this region’s charitable Hunters for the Hungry program. He was the first recipient of Southeastern Wildlife Biologist of the Year, and the first biologist to receive the Deer Management Career Achievement Award for the Southeast from Wildlife Society.
Because of failing health, Kent had to lay his guns down and put his dogs up, but his love to call turkeys and train birddogs lived on in his heart until The Lord called him home. Among his accomplishments, his greatest title worn is “Papa” to his grandson Maddux.
Survivors include his wife Freda Kammermeyer; daughter Vanda Kammermeyer, Dahlonega, GA; grandson Maddux Ebrey; sisters Edee Vassar (Mike), Granby, CT; Sue Lutz, Auburn, NH; Kate Bartos, New Hartford, CT; Lynn Kammermeyer (Tim Otter), Southwick, MA; beloved dog “Bug”; several nieces, nephews and other relatives.
A memorial service is scheduled for 4:00 PM Sunday, January 22, 2023, at the chapel of Anderson-Underwood Funeral Home. The family will receive friends from 2:00 pm to the service hour at the funeral home.
